As part of an investigation by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office, several people, including members of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) Youth Assemblies and journalist Sema Korkmaz, an employee of the Democratic Modernity magazine, were detained on charges of “membership in an illegal organization.”
With the upcoming elections, the government has intensified attacks on the opposition, especially with the trumped-up charges of “being a member of an illegal organization.” The government approached the Kurdish-based, progressive, left-wing, pro-minorities, and pro-women HDP to secure its votes. However, due to the Erdogan regime’s relentless attacks on the rights of women, the Kurds, LGBTQ, socialists, and the workers, HDP flatly rejected this “indecent proposal.” All polls indicate that the governing AKP party is headed for a loss, albeit by a small margin.
The detainees were taken to the Istanbul Security Directorate.
It is reported that a “confidentiality” decision about the case and a limitation of lawyers’ interventions were imposed on the investigation file.
