Speaking to reporter Emre Özpeynirci from the Sözcü daily, the General Manager of Ford Otosan, Haydar Yenigün, revealed that the economic condition in Turkey, as well as in Europe, as they experienced was dismal.
Turkish branch of Ford automotive corporation, Otosan, that produces largely for the European market is about to close doors. Coronavirus may be one of the reasons, however, the crash of the market had its indications long before the recent coronavirus pandemic.
Speaking to reporter Emre Özpeynirci from the Sözcü daily, the General Manager of Ford Otosan, Haydar Yenigün, revealed that the economic condition in Turkey, as well as in Europe, as they experienced was dismal.
Otosan produces cars and trucks for Ford in Turkey. The plant ships new trucks to Europe, one of its main markets. However, Yenigün said, “We are like a ball of fire here in Turkey. We just can’t cool down due to global effects.”
The general manager said, “at the beginning of the year the truck companies that projected for the year were expecting to produce 8,000 or 10,000 trucks. Now, speaking for the plants that export to Europe, Italy, Spain, and France are cancelling their orders. How could one come up with a projection? How can one get prepared for this? It is very hard to answer these questions this year. However, these wrong projections do not only apply to Turkey. We are sinking altogether. When everybody else is sinking, it doesn’t look very bad that we too are sinking.”
He continued, “There is a slowdown in Europe. We trusted Germany the most but now we are seeing that Germany too is faltering. Last week the coronavirus hit Europe and the events grew very rapidly. This means the trade is stopping. Spain is giving similar signals. Deaths are growing in Germany. There are 4 deaths in England. These are all on top of the slowdown in Europe, coronavirus is an additional problem on top of existing issues. We cannot predict how these events will reflect on numbers.”
