The workers who read natural gas meters have staged a demonstration after being refused to meet with the manager of distribution center ISKI. Led by the Enerji-Sen Union, a member of DISK, the Confederation of Progressive Labor Unions, the workers demand a stoppage of work and workers to be on administrative leave.
The workers and the union demanded a meeting with the management to discuss the highly risky environment of working in a pandemic. The union gathered a representative from each region the meters are read for the meeting, however, the management insisted that only 5 workers would be allowed to meet. Even that did not materialize when the management later refused. The labor representative said, “The workers were forced into a 5 square-meter room with 20 or even 60 people crowded together in the ISKI offices for work. However, suddenly the management rejected our offer to meet, citing “health reasons” and not to overcrowd.”
When refused a meeting, the workers then went to the gates of ISKI offices and stated their demands. The union representative Süleyman Keskin said, “The workers are knocking on the doors of at least 700 people a day without any protection. However, when we come to discuss these health issues they refuse to get together for ‘health reasons.’ “
The union and the workers called on people of Istanbul to rise up and demand “No utility bills, we don’t want to see a utility bill.”
