The prosecutor’s office started an investigation on the journalists who reported on pilgrims who were not tested and allowed to mingle with the population in Rize. Authorities in Turkey warn against reporting on the disease even if the facts on the ground contradict the official story.
Four villages and a hamlet have been forced to quarantine in the province of Rize when several people fell ill due to coronavirus infection in Turkey.
The security forces have been deployed to keep all entries and exits from these villages.
The Turkish health officials have given orders for local authorities to keep a list of all those who have fever, cough, or other symptoms of the disease.
Except for essential needs the authorities also imposed a curfew.
However, only few days ago Muslim pilgrims coming back from Saudi Arabia and allowed to travel to their home towns started to show symptoms of being infected. When the Chamber of Physicians in Rize warned that the authorities had failed in protecting public health and it was too late and the pilgrims needed to be quarantined, the authorities refused to act on the request.
