Attorney Ahmet Hulusi Kırım is a human rights lawyer in Turkey. He worked to establish the IHD, the Human Rights Association, then went on to defend the rights and innocence of hundreds of people accused by the Turkish government.
He shared the pictures of his two clients on September of 2018 who had been killed by the police. That is when the government decided to get back at the lawyer.
For years, the human rights group IHD had been under attack by nearly all Turkish governments as it exposed the crimes allegedly committed by the Turkish state. Since its inception in 1986, tortures, murders, rapes, illegal attacks especially against the leftists, the Kurds, and other minorities allegedly perpetrated by the Turkish governments or with their knowledge have been documented and published by the association. Association currently enjoys more than 10,000 members including many lawyers, activists, engineers, architects and doctors. In 2001, it started a campaign for freedom of expression to the horror of the rulers. They championed other successful campaigns against torture, against death penalty and many others more.
These are not taken lightly by the so-called Turkish Deep State. Those who are responsible for exposing these crimes had to pay a price. And they did. There have been more than 400 cases against the association by the Turkish governments. One notorious case was against the head of the Diyarbakir branch chief Osman Baydemir who had to face 60 investigative or penal cases against him personally in the frame of a year, as reported by Wikipedia.
However, charges and imprisonment is only one part of the wrath the system shows against its dissidents. The Human Rights Association’s 14 members have been murdered.
The latest attack seems to have hit the attorney Ahmet Hulusi Kırım this time. Pir News Agency is reporting that because of sharing his client’s pictures the attorney will be tried with charges of “propagandizing for the terrorists.”
Included in his “crimes” are the following charges:
Kırım is due for his trial tomorrow and the progressives are calling supporters to attend and observe the court hearing.
In his defense Kırım said, “I have been a defender of human rights all my life. Defending human rights is my job. I am against both the assassinations done in the middle of the road and the killings under torture. This case against me itself is illegal. The pictures of my clients already exist everywhere in the social media. I only remembered them on the anniversaries of their deaths. What kind of a crime is this supposed to be? As a justice, I need to emphasize that the task of a police is to capture the accused alive, even if their criminality has been established, and not to murder them.”
His trial is on January 23, 2020.
