Many people and international observers feel concerned as Turkey slips deeper into dictatorship with the attacks against the opposition.
The assaults, detentions, arrests and outright baseless accusations from the government have risen in the last weeks and the targeted opposition party HDP feels the heat.
In Ağrı, the presidents and the co-presidents of HDP have been detained yesterday in operations conducted by the Interior Ministry of Turkey. The detentions come at the heel of police raids to homes or offices of the opposition leaders. In Ağrı, the HDP officials were arrested while driving on the freeway.
One house was raided with SWAT teams and police dogs and the front door was broken by the Turkish police.
The wrath of the governing AKP party is not limited to elected officials or the members of the opposition parties. In the latest attack a journalist, Aziz Oruç, was also detained. What many found troubling is that the Interior Ministry already condemned the journalist as a “terrorist” even before he was brought in front of a judge or had a trial.
In the latest efforts to keep the AKP party together and prevent more loss of votes the government is trying to silence any dissent. Turkey is now in the top list of countries with the most journalists in prison or arrest.
