Workers constructing the new high speed train rails in Bursa, Turkey were detained on 26th of February for demanding their unpaid wages. The workers met with the construction company representatives to secure their unpaid wages, however no progress was reported.
In turn, the company called the security forces that showed up and detained the workers and their union representatives.
Worker’s representative, the Construction Workers Union, İnşaat İş, reported that they would now rally in front of the construction firm’s headquarters in Ankara, the capital of Turkey.
The union, İnşaat İş, had recently announced that it was launching a TV station called Construction TV on February 21st where the voices of the workers would be heard. The TV station will be run by construction workers who will prepare programs and run the broadcasts.
The TV station, according to the union’s press release, would, “Be a continuation of our consistent struggle to organize the construction workers who are thought to be ‘without support’ under an organization to become a strong force.”
The idea of launching a TV station materialized when the union representatives were detained during the worker disputes at the new airport construction in Istanbul. The union needed a means of communication with all construction workers and they found the best way to do this was through a TV station.
Çelikler Holding, the construction corporation on the other hand, is a corporation working closely with the ruling party AKP government of Turkey. It is active in mining, construction, tourism, marble extraction and processing, and energy sectors. Its close ties to the government secure many government contracts reaching millions of dollars in these fields.
