Doğan Holding Honorary President Aydın Doğan sold the Doğan Media which is the biggest capital group of the dominant media for a quarter century to Demirören Holding which is led by Erdoğan Demirören who is known as cryingly saying “Did we sadden you, boss?” to Tayyip Erdoğan.
It is not known yet that whether Demirören capital group which has bought Milliyet and Vatan newspapers in 2011 has realized this transaction by itself or has a support of another group.
It is alleged that this handover has realized in exchange of 1,2 billion Dollars and the information about the taken handover decision will be given to the Public Enlightenment Platformat the evening hours.
The member corporations in Doğan Media Group which have handed over are as such: Kanal D, CNN Türk, Tv2, Dream TV, Dream Türk; Hürriyet, Posta, Fanatik, Hürriyet Daily News, Trader Media East (Holland); Doğan Burda, Doğan Egmont, Doğan Kitap; Dergi Pazarlama ve Planlama (DPP).
Aydın Doğan has entered the media sector by buying Milliyet daily newspaper from Karacan family in 1979. He held Milliyet during the 1980s.
Doğan has become the biggest group of the dominant media by buying Hürriyet daily newspaper from Simavi family and the Kanal D television channel from Ayhan Şahenk in 1994.
He has added the daily newspapers of Radikal, Posta, Gözcü, Fanatik and Vatan to the trio of Hürriyet-Milliyet-Kanal D; the journals of CHIP and Pcnet; the television channels of Cnn Türk, Euro D, Süper Kanal, Dream TV and Eko TV’yi; and the radio stations of Radyo D, Cnn Türk Radyo and Radyo Foreks.
Doğan has continued its extension after AKP came to power and bought Star TV and Euro Star which were appropriated by the government from Uzan capital group. He added Euro Star, Cartoon Network, NBA TV, Boomerang and Dream Türk to his television channels. He also entered to digital platforms through D-Smart.
Doğan Media that has given full support to AKP political power, started to have problems in sharing the political power plunder in the second term of AKP government. The first crisis has experienced in late 2008-early 2009. Targeting from Erdoğan in the rallies and the cash fines worth millions was the first turning point for Doğan Media.
The repression of AKP government on Doğan Media has increased gradually after this turning point. Doğan Media has made its first downsizing attempt in the year of 2011. The group sold Milliyet and Vatan daily newspapers to Demirören capital group and Star TV and Euro Star to Doğuş capital group. The group closed a part of its music and sport channels. It also closed the daily newspaper Radikal in 2016.
Doğan Media have finally pointed as a target because of its news which declared the political ban of Erdoğan in 1998 with the title of “He cannot even be a village headman”. The mainstream government media said that the managers of Hürriyet newspaper and Doğan media have to be judged as part of the Februaru 28 (partial coup) case.
