Large numbers of women in Turkey have heeded a call by Women’s Defense to support Iranian women who have launched weekly protests against mandatory hijab.
“Wave your flag everywhere against the religious fundamentalist patriarchy on 7 February,” Women’s Defense said in a recent statement, calling for “White Wednesdays.”
Women around Turkey participated in the action, waving flags against religious fundamentalism throughout Turkey.
The Iranian movement, My Stealthy Freedom, was initiated by Iranian activist and journalist Masih Alinejad, who called for women in the country to don white headscarves every Wednesday to protest mandatory hijab.
One Iranian woman, Vida Mohaved, protested the forced hijab in Iran by stepping up on a telephone box as part of the actions.
With the protests spreading in Iran, 29 women have been arrested. Since their arrest, My Stealthy Freedom has called on women everywhere to take action, saying, “Let’s be their voice throughout the world.”
