Turkish police have sought to round up members of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) and the Peoples’ Democratic Congress (HDK) ahead of the party’s 3rd Ordinary Congress in Ankara on 11 February.
Police detained Democratic Regions Party (DBP) Co-Vice Chair Hacer Özdemir, HDK Co-Spokesperson Dr. Onur Hamzaoğlu, Revolutionary Party Chair Musa Piroğlu, Socialist Refoundation Party (SYKP) Co-Chair Ahmet Kaya, Greens and Left Future Party (YSGP) Co-Chairs Naci Sönmez and Eylem Tuncaeli, Socialist Party of the Oppressed (ESP) General Vice President and Socialist Woman Assemblies (SKM) Spokeswoman Fadime Çelebi, as well as Socialist Solidarity Party (SODAP) Spokesperson Kezban Konukçu, among others.
One detainee, Musa Piroğlu, was released after the completion of procedures at a police station.
There were reportedly warrants for 12 others, including the other spokesperson of the HDK, Gülistan Koçyiğit, as part of a separate police investigation. Police broke into Koçyiğit’s house in Menemen, İzmir, as part of their raids.
The state-run Anatolian Agency also announced that there was a warrant for outgoing HDP Co-Chair Serpil Kemalbay.
After the police operations in morning, Kemalbay said, “We will respond to the arbitrary detentions against our co-chairpersons, co-spokespersons and party members by expanding solidarity and democracy.”
In Kocaeli, a province next to Istanbul, 21 HDP delegates were also detained.
