In 2017 Turkey, people who defend life against death and secularism against jihadism are under permanent threat. After the Reina massacre where 39 were killed just at the first hours of 2017, member of People’s Houses and DİSK affiliate Basın-İş journalist’s trade union and trainee journalist of the Cumhuriyet newspaper, Ayşegül Başar is taken under custody early this morning after a police raid at her house. The pretext for the custody is a coffee shop speech in Okmeydanı on Sunday, calling the citizens to act and organise against jihadist massacres.
Some members of the People’s Houses, including Ayşegül Başar, who declared that they shall not permit the jihadist gangs to organise in their neighbourhood and they will defend secularism against jihadist fundamentalism, was declared as “terrorist threat” in a Tweet sent from the official Twitter account of the Ministry of Interior last night. The Ministry later had to erase the Tweet after the reaction of thousands of citizens who declared they also defend secularism. However early in this morning Ayşegül Başar was taken under custody; the prosecutor demanded 5 days of custody.
We shall continue to defend life against death, peace against war and secularism against jihadist fundamentalism. Ayşegül Başar is not alone; free Ayşegül Başar.
