With the escalation of Turkish state’s war against its own Kurdish citizens, the military and police assaults are spreading to all parts of Kurdistan in Turkey.
As the early elections approach on November 1, the government put into action its plan to crush the pro-Kurdish and progressive party HDP with any means necessary. Turkish police and military attack Kurdish towns and start murdering Kurdish people. When the Kurds put up a defense against these senseless murders, the region is declared “unsafe” and voting booths are moved even as far as 50 kilometers to prevent Kurds from voting. Nearly all the villages and towns that voted overwhelmingly for the HDP has seen a similar pattern of events.
Turkish government has chosen the Town of Bismil as its last target.
Bismil is a town in the province of Diyarbakir. Government declared curfew in the Esentepe, Sentepe, Rojova, Avasin, Tekel and Firat neighborhoods of Bismil on September 27th. Following the curfew large numbers of armed vehicles moved into the neighborhoods and stationed at intersections. Sharp shooters are placed on strategic roof tops and minatretts of the mosques. Even after the lifting of the curfew the police presence stayed.
Then the Turkish assault started in Bismil.
First night Elif Simsek, an 8 year old girl was murdered by the Turkish forces then the 19 year old Halil Kurtis was killed. And then a 9 year old boy, Berat Guzel was killed by the cops while playing at a park.
As they have done in other Kurdish towns and neighborhoods Turkish police in Bismil also blew away the power lines and transformers before their attacks. Shooting randomly with automatic rifles at streets, homes and neighborhoods, police shot Halil Kurtis.
When a rocket propelled grenade shot by the Turkish police hit a home it wounded 5 members of the family living in it. Elif Simsek, the 8 year old daughter of the family wasn’t that lucky. She died on the scene. This time the state had to come up with an explanation and the police made up a story that the RPG that had killed the little girl had been fired by the popular Kurdish defense organization PKK to a police vehicle and the missile had just bounced off the tank and entered the home where Elif was killed. How this could happen on a street heavily guarded and surrounded by both military and the police is still a mystery. The lawyers association Diyarbakir Bar requested an independent investigation of the incident since the official explanation or claim is denied by witnesses and those living in the neighborhood.
In the same neighborhood, the 22 year old Agit Yilmaz was wounded by the cops as well and he died later in the hospital. Agit, the father of a two month old baby, had just returned home from his military service and was standing in front of his house when he was shot down by the Turkish police.
Next day, a 9 year old child playing in the park was mowed down by the police. Not knowing that the Kurds in the park were videoing them, the police is seen in a viral video immediately coming and dropping a strange object next to the body of the boy and then taking evidence photographs. When people gathered and protested both the killing and the planting of fake evidence (probably a weapon) the police opened fire on the crowd. But the crowd refused to disperse and chanted, “PKK is the people and the people are here!”
