As Turkish government relies on the chaos of the civil war it is starting against Kurdish citizens to win at the next elections, lynching of Kurds have escalated. Now the lynching attempts have broadened to Alevi citizens as well.
In Istanbul, yesterday a group of fascists gathered and tried to overtake a neighborhood of Kurds and Alevis.
Only two days ago the fascists, helped by the state police, had attacked, destroyed and burned down 128 offices of an electoral pro-Kurdish party, the HDP. News photographs documented police assisting the attacking mobs.
Yesterday, under the pretense of “respect for the martyred” fascist mobs gathered for a demonstration and under the protection of the police started a march to lynch the Kurds in the Ikitelli district of Istanbul. During their march, armed police vehicles and tanks accompanied them to the minority district. Many people observed the police giving tactical advice to the mob and guiding them to the target.
However, aware of the recent attacks, the people of Ikitelli were prepared. The neighborhood was protected behind trenches and barricades people had erected. Alevi and Kurdish citizens had been on watch for any fascist/police activity.
The first attack came on Tuesday, September 8. The fascists tried to destroy the targets shown by the cops where revolutionary and progressive people gathered. They attacked people’s associations with ricks and stick and shot a resident.
Next day when the fascists once again tried to overtake the neighborhood and lynch the Kurds or Alevis, this time the revolutionary people of the neighborhood acted jointly, organized and defended themselves and fought back. While pulling back the fascist mobs attacked some Alevi revolutionaries on their way out. Finally the racist mob was repelled from the neighborhood.
Tonight the residents of Ikitelli are preparing a march to organize more and fight back against the Turkish State’s and nationalist mob’s attacks.
Organized resistance and solidarity has once again proven to be effective against racist mobs.
