Vote counting is still ongoing in Turkey. While Turkey is still waiting for the “broadcasting ban” to end at 21.00 o’clock to start learning first official election results, widespread electricity cuts are reported in all over the country.
In Hatay close to the Syrian border, Urfa, Van, Gaziantep and in some districts of İstanbul, electricity is cut and citizens are called to “sit over the ballot boxes” in order to protect the votes in darkness. In Urfa, Eyyubiye town police used tear gas in order to prevent citizens trying to inspect vote counting and in Erzurum where JDP is reported to lost, the party members threw ballot papers on the floors and threatened the wining party supporters.
According to first non-official results, representing 6 % of the total votes, more than 90% of the people in Turkey participated in the voting. While in many south-eastern provinces Peace and Democracy Party candidates are reported to win the majority of the votes, about the general results the official new agency AA and Cihan News Agency shows fundamentally different results.
