“We are in mourning for Reyhanli; We are on our feet for peace” was the banner the protestors marched under in Istanbul against the suspicious explosions evidently arranged to make it easier for Turkey to start a war with Syria. After the provocative bomb attacks against the people of Reyhanli on the Syrian border, providing the much needed pretense for the Turkish government to start the US’ war against its neighbor, the progressive social organizations staged demonstrations in Istanbul as well as other parts of the country against the war policies of the pro-US Turkish government.
The representative of the Peoples’ Houses organization, Ilknur Birol said, “The explosions at Reyhanli are the end of the US collaborationist JDP.” After the well-received speeches, the crowd marched in protest to the ruling pro-US Justice and Development Party’s (JDP) offices. Demonstrators chanted “Murderer USA, Collaborator JDP!” or “JDP demands war, people demand peace!” Some carried banners expressing, “Collaborationist JDP will be held accountable,” and “The murderer in Reyhanli is the US contractor JDP.”
Once in front of the ruling JDP’s offices, the Peoples’ Houses representative gave a speech in which she said with the explosions at Reyhanli, the JDP had brought the war within the borders of Turkey. Following Birol, the representative from the Confederation of Public Workers’ Unions, KESK, Huseyin Tosu, gave a speech and said Reyhanli had been transformed into a base for the jihadists, and the armed opposition against the Syrian regime. He emphasized that the JDP was responsible for the explosions.
Tosu confronted the pro-US, “moderate Muslim” Tayyip Erdogan’s government and its Secretary of Foreign Affairs Ahmet Davutoglu,”You wanted war? Now you have war! You are responsible of this. But it is our blood that will be shed. We will no longer tolerate this provocative politics that promotes war in the region.”
Tosu summarized the demands of the Turkish and Kurdish people:
People of Istanbul were joined by all progressive, left and socialist organizations in the protest.
